Mr Hugh Apthorp is a highly experienced orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip surgery. He received his orthopaedic training at Guy's and St Thomas' scheme after graduating from St Bartholomew's Hospital in 1987. He then completed a fellowship in Complex Primary and Revision Hip Surgery with Professor David Wood in Perth, W.A. Mr Apthorp has since focused on developing his practice in revision hip surgery, minimally invasive hip replacements, and treating young adults with hip problems. In 2004, he pioneered the Rapid Recovery Programme for joint replacements in the UK, achieving remarkable success with the shortest length of stay for hip replacements in England and low complication rates. He has also achieved several milestones, including the first day case hip replacement in the UK and the first patient in the world with bilateral hip replacements to go home the day after surgery. Mr Apthorp holds an Honorary Consultant Contract with the East Sussex NHS Trust and practices at London Bridge Hospital. Mr Apthorp has gained various qualifications throughout his career, including FRCS in 1992 and FRCS Ortho in 1997 from the Royal College of Surgeons of England. He has also published numerous papers and given presentations on hip surgery. Mr Apthorp is a member of the British Hip Society and frequently provides talks to GP practices and physiotherapy groups. His areas of interest include hip replacement surgery, minimally invasive hip replacement, rapid recovery hip replacement, joint replacements, revision hip replacement surgery, hip arthroscopy, pelvic osteotomy, dysplasia surgery, and complex hip replacements. He is registered as a specialist in trauma and orthopaedics with the GMC. Outside of medicine, Mr Apthorp has an interest in vintage cars. His research interests lie in hip replacement surgery, rapid recovery hip replacements, and implant design.
