If you are considering undergoing an abdominoplasty procedure, you might be wondering what can be achieved as well as what’s involved. The procedure is designed to create a smoother abdomen. This could be following the result of extreme weight loss or pregnancy, which has left the skin very loose and stretched. It is not possible to remove this skin through diet or exercise alone, and so an abdominoplasty can offer a very satisfactory solution.
How your surgeon achieves a flatter looking stomach area, is to make an incision following one of 4 commonly used patterns, removing loose skin and fat, whilst tightening abdominal muscles. The type of incision that would be most suitable for you depends on a number of factors and this will be discussed with you prior to surgery.
Your surgeon may also combine a tummy tuck with liposuction for the best results.

You should expect to have a 1-3 day stay in hospital, with a full recovery after about 6-8 weeks.

The result will be a tighter, flatter looking stomach area.

Swansea Abdominoplasty: Frequently Asked Questions

Thinking about getting a tummy tuck in Swansea? Here we will answer some of your top queries below. If your question doesn’t appear here, remember to ask your Medbelle surgeon during your consultation.

  • Is abdominoplasty a weight loss solution?

This is a common misconception. A tummy tuck is intended to repair the muscles of the abdomen and remove excess skin and tissue which is left following excessive weight loss or other factors like pregnancy. It should never be used as a tool for weight loss, especially considering weight loss after liposuction can change the look of your results.
You should ensure you are at your ideal weight before surgery, as this is something you will need to maintain after your operation. This is to ensure the skin does not re-stretch or sag due to weight gain, which will effectively reverse your operation.

  • How do I prepare for surgery, and what does the aftercare consist of?

Before your tummy tuck operation, you will be kept fully informed about how to prepare and what to expect at each stage of your treatment.

Be sure to follow any guidance given to you regarding eating and drinking before your operation. You must bring any current medication in with you.
Please note that if you currently smoke or vape any nicotine products, you will need to stop at least 6 weeks before and refrain at least 6 weeks after your treatment. This is because smoking reduces the body’s ability to heal by constricting blood flow. If you need help or advice relating to stopping smoking, the NHS offers free services to support you.

  • How long does abdominoplasty take?

A tummy tuck procedure will take between 2-4 hours. You may require up to 3 days in hospital before you are allowed to return home.

  • I’m thinking of getting pregnant after my abdominoplasty. Can I still have surgery?

Due to how the stomach muscles change and stretch following pregnancy, you should look to complete your family before considering a tummy tuck.
It is recommended you wait until you are 6 months postpartum before you have the operation. This gives your body time to heal and settle after pregnancy.
