Ear pinning is designed to resize, reshape or reposition the ears which may protrude outwards or be uneven in appearance. Here at Medbelle, our medical team are here to listen to your concerns to give you the best possible surgical outcome.

Your Ear Pinning in London

Otoplasty results illustration

Ears can be genetically disposed to sitting outwards away from the skull, or there might be a lack of a natural curve in the upper part of the ear, which can make the ears protrude away from the head. One of the ways you can correct this is by having your ears pinned, which is also known as an otoplasty.

To achieve more streamlined ears, your surgeon will make an incision behind the ear in order to expose and then reshape the cartilage. By making an incision here, this also ensures any scars will be very discreet.

Your surgeon will suture each ear into its new position, checking throughout that it is sitting correctly and much flatter to the head. Once they are happy with the new size, shape or positioning they will close the incision. Your ears will then be tightly bandaged to help stabilise their new positioning, where you will return to the ward.

As ear pinning is a short procedure taking between 1-2 hours to complete, you should be able to go home the same day. There are some aftercare steps you must take for the first few weeks, and it’s advised that you take at least 1 week off work to recover from surgery.

It may take 3-6 months for your ears to fully heal and settle into their new position.

London Pinnaplasty: Frequently Asked Questions

If you are currently researching ear pinning in London, we know you are bound to have a lot of questions. Here we will answer some of your top questions below.

  • Will an ear pinning operation affect my hearing?

    expand_more

Patients are extremely unlikely to notice a difference in their hearing, following an ear pinning (otoplasty) surgery. This is because your surgeon will only operate on the pinna section of your ear, which carries the soundwaves to the middle and inner ear.

  • Can I still wear glasses after my operation?

    expand_more

You can wear glasses normally after your ears heal completely.

However, you’ll be unable to wear glasses during the recovery period. You should therefore consider wearing contacts if you require glasses, which you may want to organise ahead of time prior to surgery.

You’ll also need to wear a headband day and night for up to a week following surgery, and at night time for a month. This is so your ears have enough time to heal and set in their new position.

  • Will I require a general or local anesthetic?

    expand_more

Ear pinning (otoplasty) can be performed under general or local anesthetic. The method which suits you depends on a number of factors, and this will be discussed with you prior to surgery.

Generally speaking, children tend to have the operation under a general anesthetic. Adults normally opt for local anesthetic to reduce recovery time. In addition, the operation time is quite short and you will be able to go home the same day, so a local anesthetic is usually the most popular option.
