Deciding to have your ears pinned (also known as otoplasty or pinnaplasty) can be very sensitive due to the bullying associated with children with larger ears and the lack of confidence it can equally cause adults.

Ear pinning is designed to resize, reshape or reposition the ears, which may protrude outwards or be uneven in appearance. Here at Medbelle, our medical team are here to listen to your concerns to give you the best possible surgical outcome.

Your Ear Pinning in London

Ears can be genetically disposed to sitting outwards away from the skull, or there might be a lack of a natural curve in the upper part of the ear, which can make the ears protrude away from the head. One of the ways you can correct this is by having your ears pinned, which is also known as otoplasty.

To achieve more streamlined ears, your surgeon will make an incision behind the ear in order to expose and then reshape the cartilage. By making an incision here, ensures any scars will be very discreet.

Your surgeon will suture each ear into its new position, checking throughout that it is sitting correctly and much flatter to the head. Once they are happy with the new size, shape or positioning, they will close the incision. Your ears will then be tightly bandaged to help stabilise their new positioning, where you will return to the ward.

As ear pinning is a short procedure taking between one to two hours to complete, you should be able to go home the same day. There are some aftercare steps you must take for the first few weeks, and it’s advised that you take at least one week off work to recover from surgery.

It may take three to six months for your ears to fully heal and settle into their new position.
