If you have noticed your skin has started to droop and has a lot more lines and wrinkles than before, then a facelift could update your look and restore a more youthful appearance. There are a number of factors which contribute to the loss of elasticity and the presence of wrinkles and jowls on the face. This can include age, lifestyle, genetics and sun exposure. No matter the reason, you don’t have to allow self-doubt to keep you from living your most confident life.

Your Facelift in London
Many patients decide to undergo a facelift procedure because they are unhappy with the effects of aging. Or perhaps excessive sun exposure and lifestyle habits have taken their toll. This may be noted in the increased presence of lines and wrinkles, as well as a loss of facial contours, especially around the forehead, eyes and cheeks. You may have also noticed the skin appearing thinner, with jowls that have formed below the chin or jawline.
The loss of a youthful appearance to the face can be the cause of low self esteem. The good news is that a facelift can help rectify many of the issues you are unhappy with. Every facelift is different and can include forehead surgery, eyelid surgery, mid facelift or a lower facelift. This will depend on what areas of the face are in need of lifting, and will be discussed with your during your consultation.
A facelift involves lifting and repositioning skin and soft tissues of the face. Your surgeon will make an incision in front of the ears on both sides of the face. Next, they will remove excessive skin and fat, which will tighten the muscles and soft tissue. Lastly, your surgeon will lift and pull back the skin before closing the incision.
There are several techniques your surgeon may use to perform your facelift, depending on the level of difference you wish to achieve. Some people require a cheek uplift to pull up the centre of the face, whereas others have drooping eyebrows which can be lifted to open the eye area. Sometimes your surgeon will lift a combination of areas on the face.
There will be an immediate difference to your face after surgery, however it could take 6-9 months to fully see the results.
London Facelift: Frequently Asked Questions
If you are considering undergoing a facelift, it is likely you have some questions about what to expect. Here we will answer some of your top questions.
How will I feel after facelift surgery?
Although performed by highly qualified surgeons, facelift surgery is still a big undertaking. As you will be under general anaesthetic, you should expect it will take some time for you to fully come round after surgery.
As you wake up, you will be under close supervision. Your face will be covered in dressings, and you may also have drainage tubes in place, however these will be removed before you go home.
Your face will feel tender for some time, and you may require painkillers. Following the general anaesthetic, you may feel tired and groggy for up to 2 days afterwards, so it’s advisable to have someone to look after you when you go home.
How much time will I need off work after my facelift?
This will depend upon what technique your surgeon uses, as more invasive facelifts will require a longer recovery period.
Generally speaking, you should expect to take around 2 weeks off work to recover from a facelift. You will not be able to do any heavy lifting for at least 4 weeks, so keep this in mind if your job is physically demanding.
Will I have any swelling or bruising following a facelift?
Most patients do experience swelling and bruising due to the nature of facial surgery. You will find the first 3-4 days are the most severe, gradually settling down after this. Adopting the correct sleeping position as advised by your surgeon will be required for the first two weeks, to minimise any further swelling or bruising.
What are the possible complications from a facelift?
No surgery is entirely free from risk, and although small, there is always a chance you may have a complication following your facelift. Potential complications can include bruising, bleeding, tissue necrosis, infection, scarring, skin discolouration, nerve injury, hair loss/hairline distortion, or general surgery complications.
All potential risks will be discussed with you prior to surgery.
