Anti-wrinkle treatment overview

What are anti-wrinkle treatments?

Anti-wrinkle treatments are one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in the UK. These injections use an extract from the bacteria, Clostridium botulinum, to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. This anti-wrinkle treatment overview page gives you an idea of what the procedure involves.

What causes wrinkles?

A wrinkle is a line or fold in the skin’s surface. Wrinkles can be seen on many parts of the face and develop due to a number of causes. These causes include:

  • Sun exposure
  • Smoking
  • Ageing
  • Gravity
  • Making facial expressions.

Wrinkles can either be dynamic or static. Some anti-wrinkle treatments can only treat dynamic wrinkles, whilst others can only treat static wrinkles.

Dynamic wrinkles

These wrinkles are ones that appear when you use the muscles in your face to make facial expressions such as smiling or frowning. Dynamic wrinkles will disappear as soon as you stop making these facial expressions.

Static wrinkles

Static wrinkles, however, can be seen all the time, even when you are not making facial expressions. Over time, dynamic wrinkles can turn into static ones.

What can anti-wrinkle treatments achieve?

The anti-wrinkle treatments we discuss on these pages will only treat dynamic wrinkles.

The treatment works by injecting a natural substance into specific muscles of the face to temporarily paralyse them. This temporary paralysis means that you cannot use the facial muscles, therefore reducing the appearance of the wrinkles.

Although this treatment is effective for dynamic wrinkles, for the treatment of static wrinkles, dermal fillers may be more appropriate. By discussing your treatment goals with your practitioner,  they will be able to recommend the most appropriate treatment for you.

Which practitioner should perform my treatment?

Currently in the UK, there are no strict regulations on who can perform non-surgical procedures such as anti-wrinkle treatments. This means that there is a high risk of choosing a practitioner who is not adequately qualified or experienced. This puts you at a very high risk of developing complications during and after your treatment.

In order to reduce this risk, Medbelle only offers treatments with BAAPS or BAPRAS surgeons. BAAPS stands for the British Association of Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeons, and BAPRAS stands for the British Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. These are the two leading societies for plastic surgeons in the UK. By choosing to have your treatment done with a Medbelle BAAPS/BAPRAS surgeon, you are ensuring that you will be in the safest hands possible.

You can contact your patient care adviser if you have any questions about this anti-wrinkle treatment overview page.
