Breast Cancer Research Awareness Month is celebrated each year globally in October. The month is about awareness of the disease; it serves as a reminder of the struggles that remain. It is a reminder that 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lives; in the UK, there is a breast cancer diagnosis every 10 minutes.
But it is also important to note that statistics of this kind can sometimes discolour the truth of a person experiencing breast cancer. The fact is, the diagnosis is just the start. From that point on, a person’s experience of breast cancer can vary hugely; some might carry on with their daily routines relatively unchanged except for more regular hospital visits, but for them, the emotional journey may be no less challenging. Others may find that, for a period, socialising and working is no longer possible the way it once was, and they may require physical and emotional support from their loved ones or care workers. For this reason, cancer charities such as Breast Cancer Now are so important. They provide support throughout a patient’s journey. They help educate and encourage people to self-check and go for screenings, but they also offer advice, care and guidance through a patient’s experience of cancer.

The need for cancer research and care does not stop at the end of October. Breast Cancer Now provide vital support and help to accelerate research all year round.
There has been fantastic progress made in the last few decades, and we now know more about cancer than ever before. But we don’t have all the answers despite better treatments and screening programs. It is just as important as ever to raise awareness and donate. So, for the second year in a row, the Medbelle team joined together to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now.
In 2020, we hosted a sale of homemade kimchi, chilli jam and other jarred goods in our office, raising more than €50. Meanwhile, this year, even more of our team got involved in hosting a cake sale over the course of the day on Friday 29th October.
Our team brought in a variety of homemade baked goods, including English scones, Bienenstich, a German classic, and some Halloween themed biscuits. The money was raised through donations only. Once again, we raised €50 for Breast Cancer Now. That money can be spent on essential lab equipment for research, funding specialist nurses time to give people with cancer the support they need on their helpline, or promoting self-checking and raising awareness about cancer signs and symptoms through leaflets education.
With this simple event, we were delighted to be able to bring our company vision to life. Our ambition to raise the standard of healthcare refers not only to how we operate as a company. It is something we also wish to reflect in our culture too. Engaging in these types of activities is a means to campaign for the good of healthcare in the community around us.
