Overview
Rhinoplasty, also called a "nose job", is a surgical procedure that changes the shape and/or size of the nose. Nose surgery is one of the most commonly performed and oldest forms of plastic surgery and can remedy both aesthetic or functional issues.
A rhinoplasty procedure can improve breathing difficulties, remodel the shape of the nose or alter the size of the nose. It may suit patients who have experienced trauma or injury to the nose or simply for patients who are unhappy with the size or shape of their nose. "A nose job" can be an effective means to change facial balance.
A rhinoplasty will typically take between 90 minutes and 3 hours. It is usually performed under general anaesthetic or with local sedation. Patients should expect to factor in at least 6 months for a full recovery.
It is a popular procedure for both men and women and is suitable for patients experiencing any of the following issues:
- Unhappiness with the current nose shape or size.
- Require correction of damage or injury which has occurred to the nose.
- Have breathing difficulties because of the nose.
- Snore loudly.
Candidates for surgery should:
- Have a healthy BMI.
- Be relatively fit and well.
- Have no serious health conditions.
- Have realistic goals for your surgery.
- Feel mentally and emotionally ready for the procedure.

The Consultation
The consultation with their cosmetic surgeon is an important part of any patient's rhinoplasty surgery journey. It allows the surgeon to explain the realistic expectations for patients choosing to have a rhinoplasty in Birmingham. It also offers the opportunity for patients to explain what they are hoping to achieve from surgery. Patients should remember that achieving great results from surgery is not only contingent on a surgeon's ability or experience. It is also the patient's responsibility to properly convey what they are hoping to achieve and communicate clearly at every stage of the process.
Other topics covered during the consultation might include conversations about surgical techniques, the placement of incisions and aftercare and recovery advice.
The consultation will also include:
- An initial discussion about what the patient hopes to achieve through surgery
- A physical examination
- An overview of the risks and complications associated with surgery
- A verbal recommended treatment plan
They will always prioritise a patient's health above all. Sometimes this may mean that the surgeon will suggest a plan for surgery that differs from what a patient initially expected, or what they had read about online, or heard from a friend. Just know that the surgeon will always have a patient's best interests at heart.

FAQs
What are the limitations of a rhinoplasty?
There is a limitation to the amount of rhinoplasty reduction that can be achieved if you have mature skin or a very large nose. This is due to the elasticity of the skin and its reduced ability to shrink down to a smaller frame. Equally, it may not be possible to make the nose as large as you may desire.
In addition, if you have had a change in the contour of your nose from an injury, it may not be possible to completely correct this. It's important to have realistic expectations and discuss your goals with your surgeon who will let you know what's possible.
Will the NHS pay for my rhinoplasty?
This procedure is not usually available on the NHS for cosmetic reasons. However, it may be provided by the NHS if you require the surgery to help with breathing difficulties although wait times may be long. Do speak with your GP about any concerns you may have about nasal breathing issues. Patient Care Advisers are always on hand to discuss the various types of rhinoplasty procedures and what they can address.
Do I need a GP referral for a rhinoplasty?
The majority of plastic surgeons are happy to see you for your first consultation without having a referral from your GP. If however, you plan to go ahead with your rhinoplasty, your surgeon may ask to contact your GP. This will be so that they can gather information about your past and current medical history.
Certain medical conditions may require a GP sign off prior to having surgery, but your personal Patient Care Adviser will let you know if that is necessary.
When can I wear glasses again after a rhinoplasty?
Your BAAPS/BAPRAS surgeon will advise that you wait for at least 6 weeks after rhinoplasty surgery before wearing glasses. This will prevent the application of pressure to the nasal bone.
You should ensure that if you must wear glasses that they are loosely fitted and padded in order to protect the results of your rhinoplasty. You could also use a nose guard or tape to lift your glasses off your nose or consider looking into contact lenses
